The iOS operating system has always lagged when it comes to bringing basic system level features required from smartphones. It took Apple several years to bring multitasking, a notification centre, widgets, third-party keyboards, and folders for apps.

When folders were first implemented in iOS 4, the system only allowed users to place up to twelve

Apps in each folder. Three years on and they finally removed the limit, with iOS 7 allowing a virtually unlimited number of apps for each folder. This gives the iOS user significantly more freedom when it comes to organising their smartphones, meaning you can allocate an entire folder to iOS games, another to work Apps and so on. People with an active work and game life could have previously found it took two or sometimes even three folders to store all their particular Apps.

Larger folders are nice, but what if you want to add a little variation to your icons? Well, thanks to FolderIcons for iOS 8, you can customize to your heart’s content. Folder Icons on iOS 8 are made up of smaller app icons on a semi-transparent background.

Once you’ve installed your FolderIcons, you can customize the icons after entering ‘jiggly mode’ (by holding down on an App or folder, you’re icons will begin to jiggle, hence ‘jiggly mode’). Just tap on the gear icon on the top left corner of any folder, and a list of options will pop up, allowing you to change the foreground and background, not to mention giving you the ability to toggle folder preview thumbnails, folder labels, and badges. You can find all the options in the iOS Settings app.

FolderIcons comes with a predefined set of icons, which you can use as the foreground. You can, however, add your own icons. Simply copy and paste them into Mobileuser > Media > FolderIcon by using a file explorer app like iFile.

Of course, these kind of system level privileges don’t come easy, and if you want to enjoy these privileges you’ll have to jailbreak your iOS device. Cuppertino Times recommends using the TaiG tool to jailbreak your iOS 8 as it supports all iOS devices running any version of iOS 8. That’s right, everything from 8.0 to 8.1.2 are all supported. Once you have jailbroken, you can search for FolderIcons in Cydia, and download & install it for free.

It really is as simple as that. In no time at all you could be enjoying the sweet sight of beautifully arranged custom folders, each with their own unique custom icon, allowing you to access what you want exactly when you want it. Happy sorting!
